Chapter 40: The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it: Part 1

The woman who sweeps into the room in a nurse’s uniform and heads straight for the kitchen sink to wash up is, at the very least, utterly stunning. Edmund has taste, Aidan has to give him that.

After the call, Olivier came to join Aidan and Lilliana on their edge of the kitchen, explaining that Mathilde is a very capable nurse and Edmund’s fiancée. This had, naturally, shocked what little sense Aidan had managed to gather up until that point right back out of him.

Lilliana helps Mathilde into a pair of gloves and a mask, but she barely takes notice of anyone else in the room. Her keen, poisonous green stare is trained on Edmund, betraying not a hint of detectable emotion above clinical curiosity as she takes in his wasted form.

“You’re a trained nurse, Miss?” Aures inquires.

“Yes.” She gives her credentials, introducing herself as Mathilde Beaufort. “I attended a few of your lectures, Dr Wynne. I am honoured to work with as accomplished a woman as yourself.”
