The Usual

I knew this was going to happen again. They do this every year and for what? Pictures? I stood there annoyed by the jocks again. The most annoying thing about growing up in Mountain Home, Arkansas was the deliberate toxic masculinity, sexism and in-the-closet-racism. I rolled my eyes and walked away and like usual I heard a whistle. I pause and turn around to roast Daniel only to find a new set of eyes that meet mine. Daniel is in his grip the whistle still on his lips.

"Please, forgive his stupidity. I'm still learning my teammates habits." he whispered. His voice was calm and smooth but I could here the thunder and his grip was the lightning. He was tall and I'm six feet. His emerald grin eyes watched me with curiosity.

"Thank you." He smiled and his five o'clock shadow showed true. His high cheekbones and almond shaped eyes gave me pause. Yum...

"Bunny?! What are you doing?" Elizabeth looked at me with annoyed expression. The delicious jock and Daniel had already started walking away.

"Nothing much, what about you?"

"Bunny, play with me not. I saw you drooling." I blush, my chocolate cheeks becoming rosy. "He is pretty bestie, but he's off limits. He hunts..." That's code for supernatural enemy. I sigh, "It's always the cute ones." I follow Elizabeth to the girl's locker room and change into our dance team uniform and before you ask no. No, it's no the school dance team it's a private dance company: Litmo's Enterprise.

"Captain, I ran out of glitter." Natalie, my glitter fiend looks at me with absolute panic. I reach into my duffel and pull out her emergency supply. She squeals and runs off. Shaking my head I sit down and put on our legendary gear: the Bunny Suit. I look in the mirror and smile, "Damn, I look good."

Boy's Locker room....

"Daniel, who was that girl you were whistling at earlier?" Daniel pauses and grimaces.

"You don't need to know who that is." Daniel finishes putting on his gear and plops down onto the bench in front of his older brother.

"That's not what I asked you." Daniel rolls his eyes and meets his brother's eyes. "Well?"

"Find out on your own."

"Why are you being so difficult? Is this because of what happened earlier?"

"What do you think? You might have ruined my chance with her..."

"Well...to be honest you probably didn't have a chance anyway." Daniel looks at him.

"Damien, what are you trying to say?"

"If you think whistling at a girl with that much class is going to get you a chance then you have some serious issues." The whole team had gone silent and were listening. The quarterback comes over and sits next to Damien.

"Class? Bunny dancers don't have class, they have ass you clap and ghost." The team laughs.

"Are you insane? This is why all of you or in and out of relationships." Damien shrugs off his team captain's arm and stands up. "I bet you all count how many girls you've been with too."

"What's wrong with that?"

"It's not a man's mentality. It's a boy's. You're suppose to be the best men and team in the area." Damien heads toward the exit, the coach is leaned up against the doorframe. He smiles proudly and gets out of the way. Damien walks out and starts his stretches near the stadium entrance. He's focus so he doesn't notice the chocolate girl in all gold with a bunny tail and ears watching him. She clears her throat and looks him right in the eyes. He slips and falls. She chuckles and rushes over.

"Are you okay?" She giggles. She's got dimples how pretty. Damien gets up with her assistance and blushes.

"Yes...sorry, I'm not usually this clumsy."

"I hope not and you're representing your school today." Damien smirks.

"I'm not sure I want to anymore."

"Oh, well just remember it's easier to see me this way if you do." She winks as a group of girls walk up in red versions of her gear. The group is gorgeous and diverse. They walk away in formation sashaying away. She must be their captain. He smiles as the rest of his team comes out and starts their stretches as well.

Bleachers...

Hmmm...he has no idea who I am. Good. I look back and find Mr. Michaelson waiting and watching. I nod and he smiles, excited. He lets his drummettes know and he goes and gets on his podium letting the school announcer know that we're about to begin. I sign to the girls behind me. I'm feeling myself today let's get a round going. The band begins and I start the hot-stance. The boys are on the side lines waiting for it to begin. I finish the stance and sit down to conserve my energy. I watch as Litmo walks up the stands and sits on the end with his family just in shouting distance. I stand and bow letting the girls know that they're here. The girls also stand and bow. My dance teacher is special in that he's a retired veteran who dances professionally. He's the second most respected man in the city. The girls end their stance in a bow and Litmo returns it, bowing deep.

"Hey!!!!" Litmo calls to his brother Mr. Michaelson. His brother calls back, "Yo!"

"I need a bunny hop, please."

"You got it bro'!" Mr. Michaelson takes his whistle out and calls out the next song and I know what kind of mood he's in. I know which stand to pull and as soon as the bass hits I start it up. It's a taunt choreographed by me. It's a lot of throwing ass and moving fast with the drums and we're doing it in rounds. I can feel the smile on my face as I hit my favorite stand move the tumble-shake and pose leaning forward with a cocky grin swaying my hips like a bunny. I look across the field from the public school's cheerleaders and make eye-contact with the yum-yum from earlier. His mouth is open and so is the rest of the team. Next thing I hear is Marco, team captain for us the Mtn. Home Jackrabbits.

"Close your mouth. Those bunnies belong to me!!!!!!" I roll my eyes and start dancing again. We dance through the game and it's nothing but a blur until half-time. The Bunnies head into the nearest locker room and change costumes. The girls are excited today's our first half-time show with a cameramen and a recruiter in the audience. I go around making sure my girls are on point. And then we march out in school colors.
