Walking down one of the many CCG hallways were two men: one with white hair, appearing in his mid-thirties, and another with black hair showing signs of balding. The white-haired man started to talk.
"How's the kid?"
"The one you found? He's alright. He's been eating food just fine since he woke up. But there are a few abnormalities..."
The men kept walking through the hallway as the black-haired man put his hand on his chin and thought of what to say next.
"Are you going to say them or...?" The white-haired man glanced at his companion, his patience thinning.
"I was getting to it! I'm just trying to figure out how to say it! Uhh... he's a ghoul."
"Then kill him." The white-haired man's voice was cold and decisive.
"He's eating and digesting real food just fine." The black-haired man quickly reassured.
"And you're certain he's not faking it?"
"I'd give it an 80 percent chance he's actually eating the food. He hasn't thrown up once, nor shown any signs of dislike for what he's eating. Other than him almost getting killed over refusing to eat his carrots," the black-haired man said with a slight smirk, trying to lighten the mood.
"Yet you said he's a ghoul?" The white-haired man's eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"Well… He showed his kakugan, but there was no kagune."
"Has he attacked anyone?"
"No."
"Then keep feeding him food and keep him under strict watch."
"Alright, sir." The black-haired man nodded, a mixture of relief and worry on his face as they continued down the hallway, their footsteps echoing in the silence.

A young boy sits in the center of a white room in a metal chair with a metal table bolted to the floor in front of him. The boy appears to be no older than six and stares at the walls, looking increasingly bored. The room is stark and featureless, making him feel more and more alone. Just as he is about to fall asleep, the door to the room opens and a basic-looking black-haired man in a suit walks in.
"Heya, Taka, feeling better?" The man's voice is cheerful, attempting to cut through the cold atmosphere of the room.
"I never felt bad in the first place!" says the boy, bouncing up and down in his chair, his energy brightening up the room.
"So, no upset stomach?" The man's concern is genuine, but there is hidden tension in his voice.
"Why do you always ask that!?" Taka says, expressing his annoyance.
"So no?"
"I'm fine!"
"Great, glad to hear it!"
"Are we gonna do something fun today or just sit around?" Taka's eyes light up with hope, his boredom momentarily forgotten.
"I'm going to introduce you to someone. He has been waiting to meet you!" The man's smile is reassuring.
"Is he going to take my blood again?" As the boy slowly starts to cover his arm defensively, the black-haired man quickly reassures him.
"No, this is someone new…"
As he finishes talking, he walks over to the door and guides a white-haired man in. The white-haired man walks in with a chair in one hand and a clipboard in the other and starts talking, his demeanor calm and composed.
"Shinohara, doesn't he look like Akira?" The white-haired man's eyes soften as he looks at the boy, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.
"Hah, it's been nine years since she was born and you still won't stop talking about her," says Shinohara with a slight smirk, shaking his head fondly.
"Are you saying it's gotten old?"
"No! It just makes me happy."
"Are you guys gonna just talk the whole time?" says the boy, looking very impatient.
Shinohara laughs a little while the white-haired man carries his chair over to the boy and sits down. The white-haired man waves off Shinohara and looks towards the boy. Just after Shinohara leaves, the white-haired man starts talking with a calm but inquisitive tone.
"Are you feeling alright? Is your stomach hurting?"
"Why does everyone care about my stomach?" Taka's frustration is clear.
"No reason. Nice to meet you. I am first-class investigator Mado, but if it makes you feel better, feel free to call me Mado."
"Ok. Umm. I'm Takahashi." Taka's voice is small, uncertain.
"May I know your first name?"
"It's Takahashi… But Mr. Shino calls me Taka."
Mado pauses for a second realizing his mistake and continues.
"Well, it's nice to meet you. I just have a few questions. First, let's start with a basic one. Do you know what a ghoul is?"
"Yes? My parents are ghouls." Taka says with pure innocence.
"Are you a ghoul?"
"I'm not sure."
"Did your parents say you were a ghoul?"
"They said I was different."
"Why?"
"Because what they eat tastes bad and they didn't like me saying that."
"Do you know what they ate?"
"Food?"
"Do you know the name of the food?"
"Meat?"
"Great! I'm glad you knew."
Mado makes a quick note and looks up to Taka with a smile, trying to ease the boy's tension.
"What about the meat did you not like?"
"It tastes bad."
"How bad?"
"It tastes like anything my dad cooks, salty."
"Did you enjoy your meals here?"
"Yeah! Mom and dad aren't very good cooks."
"Alright, one last question for you. When you look at me, what do you see?"
"A guy who likes hair dye?"
"Do I look like food?"
"No?"
"Great!"
"Was that a question?"
"No." Mado chuckles softly, shaking his head.

In District 20, outside one of the many tall apartment complexes, stand two people: Mado and Taka. The sun is just beginning to set, casting long shadows on the ground. As they start walking into the building, Mado waves over at another group of two, a tall woman with short blond hair and a young girl who looks like a mini version of the woman. As Taka and Mado approach, Mado suddenly breaks into a run, reaching the girls and enveloping them in a hug.
"Kureo! Put me down!" The woman exclaims as Mado starts to spin them around, her voice amused.
"I can do as I wish, after all, I'm Kureo Mado!" Mado says as he puts her down, his grin wide and mischievous.
"I gave you half that name and I can take it away too!" she retorts, laughing.
They laugh for a bit as the young girl walks over to Taka curiously.
"Are you Taka?"
"Yeah? Are you uhh…"
Taka stood for a bit, trying to remember the young girl's name, only for her to say it first.
"Akira."
"Yep! Akra!"
"Akira."
"Yep! Like I said, Akira!"
"Akira."
"I said it right that time!"
"So you got it wrong?"
Taka paused and stared at Akira. He kept staring until he just changed the topic.
"So we're siblings now?"
"Yeah."
"Mado told me about you!"
"Dad told me much more about you!"
"No!"
"As Mom says, he's got loose lips when he's with family."
"He's got loose lips with me too! Every time he talks he stutters!"
"That's not what loose lips means."
As the two kids played, the smiling couple finally walked over towards the kids.
"Taka, let's go see our house." The woman called warmly, half hugging Mado's arm.
Taka looked up at Mado and the woman, his eyes filled with a mix of anticipation and excitement. "Okay," he said softly, hesitantly taking Akira's hand as they all walked towards the apartment building, ready to start their new life together.
