[RINZLER]
The two packs have directives. Clear ones followed from generations back before Alpha Aspen and Rinzler came to be. No one would break them as they were as simple as a, b, c, d. How hard was it not to go around screaming to the Lake, "I am a wolf, I am a wolf."
Yeah, every member of the pack knew. Developing, the pups were informed regarding the matter and they followed it. This provided a sense of balance and certainty. No room for a surprise attack from humans. Chief Ayn and her family were the lucky ones to know of their existence. Furthermore, their knowledge of the matter came in handy.
"It is pretty simple, you are smart my child, and I trust you shall keep the rule in your head all day long." Rinzler's mother had told him one day. Those words kept ringing in his mind as he thought about whether he should tell Ivy that it had been a slip of tongue. The word meant nothing. It was hard though as it wasn't his first time calling her that.
The encounter always happened with Rinzler depressed as shit, every damn time. He would be inside his head thinking of the rejection he was about to face after he mated Marina. So, yeah, a pure mistake. For a split second, Rinzler wished he could explain to Ivy Tanner what he meant by calling her beta. But he couldn't, not when his wolf kept reminding him that it wasn't in his position to do so.
He wasn't aware also that Ivy was Marina's beta.
After every rejection, there has never been room for pillow talks. Oh, how Rinzler would love those talks so he would compliment Marina in ways she couldn't think of rejecting her again. Every time he drove back to his pack, he would think, "I need pillow talks, even for a second."
Again, if there was an opening, the man wouldn't discuss having a human beta but rather something related to the two of them alone. Love, making love, and their pups, hell even naming them. Some talks were saved for the round table and not the bed.
Meeting Ivy had been his best day after a long time, but later he realized he shouldn't have let his hopes rise. After their first meeting, he waited for Ivy to ask him about their wolf nature. Alas! The question never came. The more he spoke with Ivy the more perplexed he got. He couldn't help but think maybe Ivy knew and cared less, or maybe he just didn't know.
It was more confusing since he knew how close Marina was to Ivy. Was it possible Ivy wasn't pretending and Marina hadn't told her? And if yes, why? Questions lingered inside his mind, smitten by Marina and his obsession for her, he let it go and went with the flow.
However, that wasn't the only reason why he never happily told everyone that he has gotten his beta. After their first meeting, after his happy hormones went down, the shock came. There was no bond between him and Ivy. Not at all. It was like it had been a lie when his wolf confirmed Ivy was their beta. Needless to say, he was crushed. Mateless and beta-less he kept the revelation to himself.
Lost in his thoughts, Rinzler Aspen didn't realize he was playing with some strands of Ivy's hair. Swirling it around his fingers, so interesting that Ivy mentioned nothing. Just as she didn't understand Marina most of the time, she never understood the man's reactions or anything he did. She knew the man playing with her hair checked on her best friend once a month.
Silence passed, Ivy mumbled, "there is something about you two, I can't figure it out."
Breaking from his thoughts, Rinzler smiled as he removed his hand from her hair, "you have been saying."
"It is true." Ivy sat up.
"How are you feeling?"
"I am fine. If it were up to me, I would be at home working."
"Marina?"
"You know her well, she insisted I stay."
"Where is she?"
"She left to buy me some food. Seems like she flew off abroad to do so."
Chuckling, Rinzler bent and kissed Ivy's forehead, "get better, I will look for her."
"Okay," Ivy said, her face with questions.
Ivy's eyes unraveled a certain fear in him, it was weird. He staggered a bit, and pointed at the door, "I should go."
Uncovering herself, she stepped on the floor, "Rinzler, are you sure you are okay?"
"I am. That question is for you."
"If you aren't, my offer still stands."
"Uhm." Fidgeting, Rinzler called out for his wolf, he was acting like a surviving drenched puppy with a lack of social skills. His wolf curtly promised him, "I will take care of this." His discomfort disappeared. Collected, he waved at Ivy, "Ivy, thank you."

In the elevator, Ivy's voice laced with understanding rang through his mind, "don't worry about me, go find Marie."
Shaking Ivy's voice out of his mind, a tiny smile appeared on his chapped lips as someone entered the elevator. He licked on it and played with his car keys in his pocket. The cafeteria was deserted. Where else would Marina go at that time to get Ivy's food? He dropped a text for Ivy and got into his car.
Rinzler's head began throbbing, he got the coffee mug he discretely stole from their kitchen and drank the components inside. The taste was stale, it had stayed for days, and with the urgency to see Marina, he forgot to make another one. His head pounded heavily, his breath came out rugged, and he begged his wolf to ensure they didn't die before seeing their mate. Unevenly breathing, he drove off. Perhaps sleep might help.
Driving off to Marina's house, he fought the vast urge to fall asleep while driving. Dear demise was calling out for him. Wasn't there no one else it would screw over? At Marina's opened gate, it didn't register in his mind as it would have any other day. He only wanted to lay down his head that seemed any moment it would dislocate itself from his neck.
His usual packing spot was bare and clean. His smile came out genuine even though he could feel his head begging to drop. He knew it was one of the reasons he never tire to visit his mate
He fumbled with the keys, and Rinzler's knees almost gave up on him. He let out a groan when he managed to open the door. Darkness consumed him, he shut the door as his body gave out on him.
