A Song for Silver Snow

UNDERGOING REWRITE AS OF 2024!!! *** This story begins with the average good versus evil, but there was no happily ever after. It came at a cost nobody was prepared for. The evil lived on, contained in its prison but patiently awaiting the day it would rise again... *** "I don't belong here. I don't belong in this world, in this time, in this body." The last thing Yin Xue remembered was rushing into a fire to save a girl just like her—shunned and feared by others because of the power they were born with. The flames trapped them in, and then there was darkness. When she awoke, Yin Xue saw the world through a new pair of eyes. Literally. Adopted and raised in The White Forest by one of the Devil Lords who had escaped death, Yin Xue thought her life would be peaceful. Until her master was murdered and she had to step outside her home and fulfill a poor soul's wish. Yin Xue set out for revenge, hatred in her heart and her master's words echoing in her mind. She plotted and schemed and lied and stole. She would never deny the blood stained on her hands because sacrifices had to be made. People were cruel and cold, so she had to be even more so. The world was her chessboard; she just didn't expect so many players. But the web of destiny was so intricate that nobody could escape it. A prince living a lie since birth. An assassin with a hidden identity. One of them would break Yin Xue; the other would break the world. The question is, who was which? Meanwhile, up in Heavenly Realm, an emperor dances with the dangerous truth and a god weaves the past, present and future together. They don't know the consequences of their actions. Add in a name list written in blood, a poem hiding a story, and an eternal curse or two and here is one hell of a story. The Black Dragon will be freed, secrets will resurface, and an old prophecy will be revealed. Yin Xue was taught to use pretence as a shield against a world full of deceit, and she had been pretending for her whole life, even to herself. But if she takes off that mask, who is she truly underneath? When the snow falls and the blood flower blooms, we shall see who survives the brutal winter. *** This is my first novel. A New Life

"Please take my daughter away..."

"What is her name?"

"Yin Xue. Yes, Yin Xue is perfect for her..."

"Go!"

The baby girl named Yin Xue opened her eyes, awoken by the blurred noises near her ears. Soon the voices faded into nothing, and her vision came into focus.

Her clear eyes showed no sign of an infant's innocence and curiosity of a new world, though. They shone with a clarity that did not belong to someone her age.

Xue, or rather—Yin Xue, was aware of the things happening around her thanks to her sharpened senses despite being in an uncomfortable position that didn't allow much room for sight. She wiggled to get a better view of her surroundings, but all that she could see was an endless expanse of white. It was not winter, and yet the trees and earth were white. The wilted leaves, at least, were normal shades of red, orange and brown.

Yin Xue felt a metaphorical thunderbolt strike her and silenced her mind for two seconds. Then panic broke loose.

'Where is this place?'

'What happened?'

'How did I get here?'

This was not a place she remembered at all. It was unfamiliar. The unknown was always the most terrifying, and this time was no different.

Yin Xue reached out a hand, but when she did, she froze. She looked at the tiny hand in front of her that looked so fragile it could be broken if held too tightly. Her mouth gaped open. 'Oh no. No, no, no, no, no...'

"I've become a baby?!"

All that came out was angry little gurgles that went ignored by Bai Rong. The ex Devil Lord was getting the hang of cradling a baby while foraging for food and shelter in a dangerous forest. If she was willing to admit it—which she was not—it felt quite nice, like she finally had someone to rely on...

Cough cough. What she meant was, someone who relied on her.

Back to Yin Xue. She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her mind, and images flashed past her so fast she barely glimpsed at them.

It was nighttime. There was a fire. She was running into the inferno. Why?

Yin Xue had no idea.

The one thing she was sure of was that she didn't belong here. This forest was not her home, this woman carrying her was not her family, and this baby's body was not her own. She remembered having more flexibility and freedom, and being able to walk and talk, which meant she was definitely not a child. However, when she tried to recall her face, her head was struck with pain and she had to give up.

The woman whose dress reeked of coppery blood finally stopped at a cave hidden behind a waterfall and said, "This is it. Home sweet home. We'll live here from now on and I, Bai Rong, personally guarantee that you won't die on my watch. Not that you understand a word I'm saying."

Yin Xue didn't even blink.

Before Bai Rong started decorating their new cave, she left Yin Xue alone to go and take a bath. As the blood on her clothes and body peeled away from her skin and dyed the clear water of the river red, Bai Rong's fingers traced her abdomen where a long, hideous scar remained.

With the same sword on the same day, Lin Jun had wrecked her life twice. Angry and sad tears flowed down her cheeks, and this time, knowing she was truly alone, Bai Rong cried to her heart's content.

Each time she was drowning in the sea of sorrow, she would dive under the water and let it wash away her tears. When she resurfaced, she would do it all over again. Bai Rong knew it was stupid, but if she mixed her tears with the water, she would be able to lie to herself that those weren't her tears, and that she wasn't crying, because it wouldn't change the past.

'No revenge,' Bai Rong thought bitterly. 'No cultivation. Nothing. Just me, a baby and...'

Bai Rong ran her hands through her wet hair and exhaled. A triumphant look flitted on her face and her lips pursed in something that was not quite a smile.

"And a loophole left by an overconfident god."
