"Don't let Curry take an easy shot!" Roy Williams shouted to his players.Ty Lawson nodded, signaling that he understood, but he wasn't too concerned.
Was a long-range three-pointer considered an easy shot? He figured it was just a lucky attempt.
Lawson hadn't studied Curry's game film, and after the first half, Curry seemed like just a skinny, baby-faced guy with an overblown reputation. A guy who actually couldn't shoot threes.
Lawson returned on offense, attacking inside through a pick-and-roll. But his layup missed the basket, and the Bulldogs gained possession.
Curry brought the ball upcourt and signaled for Drew to set a screen. Just like in the first half, Hansbrough stayed inside, unwilling to venture out.
Danny Green got caught behind Drew's broad frame. Curry, seeing the defense in front of him, didn't hesitate. He launched a three-pointer directly!
Swish!
The ball flew in a high arc and went straight through the net! The score was now 33-40, with the Bulldogs trailing by just 7 points.
Curry pointed skyward with one hand and stepped back even before the ball went in.
The moment he shot it, he knew it was going in.
As the ball swished through, the arena, filled with North Carolina fans shouting "Defense," momentarily fell silent. The cheers of Butler fans cut through the quiet like a sharp whistle.
"Two consecutive three-pointers! Looks like Curry's found his rhythm again!" Jim Nantz exclaimed.
Dell Curry, watching from the stands, couldn't help but smile with pride. That was his son!
Liam Gonzalez exhaled a long breath of relief and smiled at Brad Stevens.
"Brad, we've still got a fight!"
Stevens nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes, we've got a real fight on our hands!"
"Tyler, defend! Guard him! Don't give him another open shot!" Roy Williams barked at Hansbrough, his eyes bloodshot.
Hansbrough raised his hand to acknowledge his coach's orders, feeling slightly aggrieved.
Weren't you the one who told me to stay inside and not step out? Hansbrough thought to himself, feeling unfairly blamed.
On the other side of the court, Liam noticed that Roy Williams hadn't called a timeout despite Curry's hot hand. He laughed softly to himself.
"Donovan, Tyronn Lue, Popovich, Rivers—none of you would have the guts to let this game carry on without a timeout," he thought to himself.
Back on the court, Hansbrough once again took the ball in the paint, trying to post up against Drew. But this time, he was much more cautious, wary of another hard foul.
This caution slowed him down, and just as he turned to attack the basket, Wayne Ellington shouted from behind him, "Watch out!"
Before Hansbrough could react, the ball was gone from his hands, stolen by Butler!
The North Carolina players immediately started retreating on defense, but Curry had already sprinted ahead to the frontcourt, leaving everyone behind.
The Bulldogs, quick to capitalize, threw the ball downcourt, landing perfectly in Curry's hands. There was no one in front of him.
"Joder (Fuck!" several North Carolina fans cursed out loud.
They expected Curry to go for a dunk.
But what they saw next left the entire arena in stunned silence.
Instead of driving to the rim, Curry stopped just outside the three-point line, and without a moment's hesitation, pulled up for a long-distance three-pointer!
His movement was so smooth, so deliberate, that it was clear this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. He had planned this.
When Curry shot, the other players were still in the backcourt. He was completely alone, but he moved with the urgency of someone taking a contested shot.
All eyes followed the orange ball as it flew through the air, time slowing down as it arced towards the basket.
Swish
The ball sank through the net, and the stadium came alive with the roars of Bulldogs fans celebrating wildly.
The score was now 36-40.
The camera zoomed in on Curry, who punched the air, roaring with ferocity.
Curry thought, "I just want to shoot threes in fast breaks! I am the most accurate!"
All the frustrations of the first half vanished with that one shot. An overwhelming sense of confidence surged through him.
He felt like he was unstoppable.
"Oh! My! God!! Curry made a three-pointer in a fast break—and it was from long distance! I've never seen anything like it! This is the craziest shot I've ever witnessed! Dell, does he do this often?" Jim Nantz exclaimed in disbelief.
Dell Curry, barely able to contain his laughter, shrugged.
"Stephen is so free-spirited. Nothing he does on the court surprises me anymore. How do I put it? His style is...unique. I've played against a lot of superstars—Michael, Larry, Magic, Isaiah...but none of them played like him."
Even the North Carolina players looked confused, unsure if they had just seen what they thought they had.
A three-pointer on a fast break? That was unheard of.
If they had tried something like that, their coach would have torn into them.
But there, on the sidelines, they saw Liam Gonzalez, the young head coach of Butler, clapping enthusiastically, looking like a fool in his excitement.
What is happening? the North Carolina players thought.
Liam gave Curry a thumbs up, shouting, "Well done, Stephen! Keep shooting like that!"
"???"
The North Carolina players couldn't believe what they were hearing. Is that really something a head coach would say?
Shocking as it was, the game went on.
Ty Lawson took the inbounds pass from Danny Green and advanced the ball to the frontcourt.
"Settle down and get a basket!" Roy Williams shouted desperately. The veteran coach needed his team to score, or he feared he might have a heart attack.
But the Bulldogs, energized by Curry's consecutive three-pointers, were relentless on defense. Their rotations were fast, making it almost impossible for North Carolina to get a clean look.
Finally, Hansbrough muscled his way through a double-team and scored in the paint, bringing the score to 36-42.
Hansbrough panted heavily as he jogged back on defense, thinking, What's going on? Why is everyone on the other side playing like they've taken stimulants?
The CBS data center displayed that the game's viewership was skyrocketing, surpassing three million and capturing the attention of people everywhere.
