Avery's dark clothes blended with the fading light as she walked back to the university, the morning chill biting at her. Her heart pounded even as her excitement gave way to deep fatigue. As the first rays of sunshine touched the horizon, Avery took a moment to breathe. She then shifted from being a trained killer to a regular college student. She had barely enough time before her first class to shower and change.
As Avery walked across the quad, now buzzing with students clutching coffee cups, she felt out of place. How many of her classmates, still faintly smelling of gunpowder, had been on a mission the night before? When she arrived at her First Experience with Brain Research class, the auditorium was half full. Old habits kicked in as she scanned the room for potential dangers and exits. Her gaze settled on Lucas Sterling, sitting in the back row surrounded by a group of students staring at him. Avery knew this man. Lucas's simple smile faltered slightly when their eyes met. Avery's brief satisfaction at surprising him was short-lived. She chose a seat in the middle of the room, close enough to hear but far enough from Lucas to avoid any awkward encounters.
When the lecturer began, Avery was fully engaged. She had always been interested in studying behavior, as understanding people was crucial for her work. She was so focused that she almost missed Lucas glancing at her from behind as she took notes. To avoid conflict, Avery quickly packed her things at the end of class. Lucas, however, was quicker and quietly approached her as she headed for the door.
"Avery Chen," he said with a laugh in his voice. "Good to see you here. How's your first day going?"
Avery shot him a cold look. "It's been helpful. Please excuse me now."
Avery tensed as Lucas's hand reached out, not quite touching her arm. "Hey, you don't have to rush. A few of us are getting coffee before the next class. Want to join us?"
For a moment, Avery was tempted to refuse. However, something about Lucas's demeanor made her wary. His natural charm seemed to have a purpose, and it was clear this invitation was more than just friendly. She replied, "Yes," her curiosity getting the better of her. "Since when?"
Lucas's smile widened, and Avery couldn't shake the feeling that she had walked into a trap of her own making. The campus coffee shop was warm and smelled of freshly ground beans and soft wood. Avery found herself squeezed between Lucas and a lively redhead named Zoe. The conversation was filled with jokes and campus gossip, but Avery stayed quiet, observing the group dynamics. Lucas was the center of attention, his energetic personality drawing everyone in. Beneath the surface, there was a layer of unfinished sentences hinting at deeper connections.
"So, Avery," Lucas said, suddenly focusing all his attention on her. "Why did you come to Blackthorn? Besides your impressive academic record, of course."
Everyone at the table turned to look at Avery, and the conversation stopped. She took a sip of her latte to buy time. "I'm here to study. To build my own future."
Lucas leaned in, his sharp green eyes fixed on her. "And what does that mean for the future?"
The air seemed to thicken with tension. Avery knew the others were watching her closely. She turned to Lucas. "Someone of my choosing."
Lucas's smile returned quickly after a brief pause. "Well said. So we can make our own paths." The others raised their cups in a fake toast, but Avery had the distinct feeling she had just been assessed. As the conversation shifted back to safer topics, her mind raced with possibilities. Was this typical college behavior, or was there something more sinister happening? How involved was Lucas Sterling?
The rest of the day passed in a blur of classes and orientation activities. Avery was always on edge, aware of the hidden currents in university life. She saw Lucas throughout the day, often in a crowd, always watching her with that knowing smile. As night fell, Avery returned to her dorm, her mind spinning with new information and unresolved questions. She almost missed the folded note under her door, lost in her thoughts. Her heart raced at the thought of another assassination contract as she opened the paper. Instead, it was an invitation:
"Midnight. Old clock tower. Come alone. L"
Avery looked at the note, torn between fear and curiosity. She knew Lucas Sterling and his games were likely a trap, but a part of her, driven by the desire to uncover the secrets of Blackthorn and not back down from a challenge, thought this might be her chance.
As the hours passed, Avery debated her choices in her small room. She could ignore the invitation, focus on her studies, and stay safe. But Avery Chen had never been one to shy away from a challenge. At 11:45, she left her room and quietly made her way across the shadowy campus. The old clock tower loomed in the moonlight. Avery moved cautiously, alert for any dangers. She nearly missed the figure leaning against the tower's base.
Lucas stepped out of the shadows with a serious expression instead of his usual smile. "I wasn't sure you'd come," he said softly.
Avery instinctively reached for the hidden knife at her belt. "I almost didn't. Lucas, what's this all about?"
He glanced around as if checking for eavesdroppers. "Not here. Stay with me." Avery's gut told her to run, but driven by curiosity and determination, she pressed on. Lucas led her to a hidden door at the base of the tower, using an old-fashioned key from his pocket. As the door creaked open, it revealed a dark staircase. The moonlight cast deep shadows on Lucas's face, making him look older and more menacing.
"Last chance to turn back, Avery Chen," he said gently. "Once you enter, there's no coming back. Blackthorn will be revealed for what it really is."
Avery's heart pounded with a mix of fear and excitement. She thought of her father, the life she had left behind, and the future she hoped to build. She knew that whatever lay beyond that door would change everything. Avery took a deep breath and looked directly at Lucas. "Sterling, darkness doesn't scare me."
Lucas gave a weak smile. "We'll see about that."
After one last look at the peaceful university behind her, Avery stepped into the shadows of the clock tower. The door slammed shut, sealing them in a world of whispered secrets and schemes. As they climbed the winding staircase with the clock ticking above, Avery felt she was reaching a point of no return. Whatever awaited her at the top would shatter her carefully crafted image and force her to confront Blackthorn University and herself. Every creak of the steps heightened the suspense, and Avery's growing interest clashed with her instincts as a killer. What could be so important and secret that it required this covert meeting in the dark? At last, they reached a large wooden door. Lucas placed his hand on the ornate handle. Turning to Avery, his face was hard to see in the dim light.
"Remember," he said, "once you see what's on the other side, there's no going back. You can't return to being just another student."
Avery squared her shoulders and pushed her anxiety aside. Lucas said, "Open the door." He gave her one last look before nodding.
With a soft click, the door opened to reveal a room covered with maps, pictures, and strings connecting various pieces of information. Vintage lamps cast a warm glow over the circular space. A group of students stood around a large table in the center, their voices hushed as Lucas and Avery approached. Avery's attention was drawn to the person sitting at the head of the table. Unlike the chaos of the room, Professor Elena Russo's composed posture and sharp gaze made it clear that Avery's life at Blackthorn University was about to become far more complicated and dangerous than she had ever imagined. As the door closed behind them, trapping Avery in this hidden world of power and secrets, Professor Russo said, "We've been hoping for you."
