She approached a rusted elevator, its doors slightly ajar. Beyond it lay the underground facility rumored to be the King’s latest stronghold. She took a deep breath, steadying herself. Every fiber of her being told her this was a trap, but she couldn’t turn back now.

With a sharp tug, Zara forced the elevator doors open wider and peered inside. The cables were frayed, and the car hung precariously a few stories below. A maintenance ladder ran along the side of the shaft, disappearing into the darkness below.
