Building Trust

"With," Gwen answered. "you have been given the authority to act if and as you feel necessary, but for the most part you work with Shield, you don't really have to worry though you will have to make reports for me and I will have to give those reports to Fury. And if that's not satisfactory then it's always open for discussion. Do you have any more concerns?"

"Yes actually," Harry nodded. "firstly how is this team supposed to work?"

"What do you mean?" Thor asked.

"Well I don't get what the exact system here is." Harry replied. "I mean, first of all, who is in charge? Who is leading?"

"Cap is in charge." Tony said immediately.

"Is he?" Harry asked. "Look Steve over there is a nice guy and all and I mean no offence when I say this but he's hardly with the times. I mean does he even know who Beyoncé is? Bruce Lee? How about important shit like how to work a laptop and how to use a USB?" Everyone looked at Steve who looked slightly embarrassed. "Plus he's a bit too hopeful for the best in my opinion."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Steve asked, sounding unsure if he should be offended.

"Okay, you from what I've seen and heard are the sort of person who likes to save everyone, protect everyone, do good at every possible moment. But that's not the kind of person I think that should lead. Let me give you a situation, you have to chose between killing a baby to let a ten year old live or let the ten year old die and the baby live, which do you chose?" Harry asked.

"I know that we can't save everyone." Steve said in a heavy voice. "I don't like the fact, but it is a fact, with that being said I will still try my best to save as many people as possible." He said in a determined voice.

"That's honestly a better answer than what I was expecting, but my point has been made. Stark, you can't be leader either seeing as you have no real experience leading a field team, same with Banner. Thor can't be leader because he's going to be a part time member at best, unless he plans to leave Asgard for good and stay here. Even then you're probably the only person on this team who knows less about this world than Steve. I have no interest in leading, I assume Clint and Natasha don't either, am I right?" He asked Clint and Natasha who both nodded.

"Can I perhaps make a suggestion?" Gwen asked in a small voice, as if she was unsure if he should be interrupting.

"I'm all ears." Harry shrugged and everyone else looked at her.

"Well how about you all have Captain America be the leader for now since he is experienced at leading but also have one or two people in an advisory position?" She suggested. "And if you guys don't like that then you can change later."

"I think that works." Pepper commented. "Do you have any other concerns?" She asked Harry.

"Matter of fact I do." Harry said after taking a sip of his drink. "I will admit that we fought in that battle better than I expected us to, but I can't help but point out that we're all very different people. I mean look at Banner, brains yeah but he's also worried about his own shadow, Thor's a prince from Asgard, Stark's a playboy genius with expensive armour, Cap's a soldier from WW2, Widow and Hawkeye are Shield agents with their own lovely little back stories, I'm a wizard from another world."

"Wait what?! You're an alien?!" Rhodey blurted out.

"No, I was born in a different world, you might call it a different dimension or different universe."

"Wow." Tony whispered. "Are you kidding me?"

"No, I was in a world where there was a bunch of other wizards like me, I was born at the end of one war and a second one started when I was fourteen, I started fighting when I was fifteen."

"You were a child soldier?" Pepper gasped, the other looked surprised and even sympathetic, apart from Natasha who had a neutral look on her face.

"I wasn't a child when that war started," Harry shook his head. "I've been fighting and killing since. That's my point, we are all from different worlds with me and Thor being from actual different worlds. Yes we worked good together in the battle but does that really make us a team? Can we be consistent with that? I mean, we've already argued over what to do with Loki, there were the arguments in the hellicarrier. Can we be consistent here? Or is this just something we're supposed to enjoy while it lasts?" Harry asked, looking at everyone, waiting for an answer.

"I think...that this can work." Steve said after a short silence. "You are right in that we need to be consistent, I suggest we all spend time training together, getting to know each other. Becoming friends, understanding each other, then we can decide if this works. Is that all?" He asked Harry.

"I have one last thing, for now at least," Harry sighed. "if we do this, if we are all putting effort into this then I don't want any government involvement."

"Wait what?" Rhodey asked.

"You heard me, no government involvement." Harry repeated.

"Wait a sec, shouldn't we discuss this?" Rhodey asked the group. "I mean no offence but why should we let one guy make all the decisions?"

"I'm not making any decisions for anyone, I'm merely stating that I am not going to be a part of this if there is government interference. Because if we're being controlled by the government then we might as well just scrap this idea and go work for Shield."

"I'm with Harry on this," Natasha spoke up, bringing everyone's attention to her. "our government decided to send a nuke at New York. We were all very lucky to have not been blown up, what if the portal had permanently closed or if it went off before Harry could send it up the portal? We wouldn't be here right now. While I have no intention of stopping my work at Shield, I don't think it's a good idea to give full control of such a powerful group of people to people who were willing to send a nuke at us."

"Exactly," Harry nodded in agreement. "you all want to make the Avengers to help people, correct? Well that's not going to be the priority if we are under the control of others, if we're under government control then our priority goes from the good of the people to the desires of the government."

"Don't you think you're overreacting a little?" Rhodey said with disbelief.

"I don't, look I understand, you served and you take orders and you follow them without question. I have served, in my world I had fought in two different armies. I used to accept orders just like you, but I realized quickly that blindly following orders is not a good thing and I have seen people who have suffered because of it." Harry said in a serious voice.
