Chris took his time reaching the village where the problem lies. He knew that they were in need but that didn't mean that he would waste the opportunity to teach his sister and come to their rescue.
It wasn't like he didn't sympathize with the people but he saw that something was wrong with the task. He couldn't pinpoint what was wrong but he had a feeling that the task wasn't as simple as the notice said.
This was why he delayed reaching the village as much as possible, hoping to see what exactly was happening. While he did that, he taught his sister how to survive in the wild. It may not be important for now but it would be quite useful not just while being here on Aredia but also on Earth.
He knew that with the world's awakening, the animals would mutate. Soon the world would be overrun by monsters and beasts. Many human settlements would become devoid of human life. They would either be dead or would have run away seeking refuge some place else.
