A Tearful Goodbye

Ghost.... What do they mean?

The Ghost sighed as Tempest and Spencer exited the carriage.

I didn't want to tell you all.

Tell us what?

The reason I'm still standing here is that I made a deal with Death and Mithos.

The crowd murmured for a moment.

Wait does this mean....

Yes. It is my time for them to take me away.

NO! I WON'T LET THEM! growled Kett.

Yeah! We're all with Kett! You have to stay with us!

I truly wish I could... However, I gave them my word.

Death shook his head. I'm to blame for Doctor Brittany and the many mages failing to replenish the Ghost's life force. I simply couldn't take his word, so I ensured it. I kept him from being able to generate new life within his own body.

The Heroes of Ottawa have their weapons drawn while everyone is is holding back tears.

THAT'S BULLSHIT! yelled the Overlord. Why do you two get to take him away! He's suffered enough!

I assure you, he will not suffer. I have seen his pain. said Mithos.

Well that's a load of shit. He's a member of Lots, he's not free to die yet. said Bubba defiantly.

Yes, I must agree with Bubba, however. He was a Reaper long before a member of Lots. As such, he has much to teach us.

Mithos smiled while Death groaned. I am touched to see all of you standing up for him, however, it is in fact time for him to go.

Can't you take one of us instead?

No, I'm afraid not.

With those words, tears began falling from everyone's eyes. The Ghost stood next two the two gods. Can I say goodbye?

Yes.

The Ghost stood before everyone and smiled.

We all knew this day would come eventually. I am grateful to have stood next to all of you, smiling and fighting alongside every one of you. Keep pushing those limits and boundaries! Rebuild this land! Make it better than the one we left and the one we currently have! Favor smiles upon you all! I promise you, I am with each and everyone of you. I know this was a happy day, supposed to be anyway. So if I could ask you all to do one thing for me...

What is it Ghost?

Yeah! We'll do anything!

I want all of you to smile.

Everyone looks up at the Ghost who has tears rolling down his cheeks.

Grandma told me always to smile... I can't right now, so please... Smile for me. Smile like nothing in the world is wrong, like the fates have been defeated. Stand up and smile! I want everyone here to smile right now!

As they sobbed, one by one, smiles appeared before him.

We're gonna miss you Ghost.

Thank you for everything you did for us, with us, and to us. You showed us the way and in your honor, we shall rebuild! You can count on all of us!

The Ghost smiled back at them. I leave this task in all of your capable hands.

The Ghost turned to Death and Mithos. I'm...

SON!

Dad I....

Go, rest easy! We'll make sure this world is one you would be proud of!

The Ghost nods and turns back to Death and Mithos. They begin walking off into the snow, once they reach the gates of the city followed by everyone, the Ghost's body finally gives out and his soul is freed from it.

It is shining gold, blue and red as it hovers in front of everyone.

Tears fall freely as the two gods and the soul of the Ghost leave the world as the snow falls, leaving everyone crying.

Do you have any regrets?

My only regret... Was not being a better friend to all of them. Being a better son... A better grandson...

I highly doubt your friends and family see it that way. After all, they were all willing to fight two gods to keep you around.

Thanks Mithos, I needed that.

Now Ghost, our deal has been fulfilled. I leave you in the care of Mithos.

Take care Death.

You as well.

As Death departs, Mithos and the Ghost enter the realm of stars over looking the world. Finally, for the first time, the Ghost had true peace. His heart was warmed by the thoughts of his friends and family, just as he always wanted.

Worry Not! The Ghost's story doesn't end here!
