Subdued by her melancholy for a moment, Nanzhi snuffled and started making a fire to cook. It's more apt to say she was cooking up some Chicken Egg Black Porridge.

The mule was on its last legs, and so were the chickens. She didn't know if they could make it to Yan City.

Retrieving four eggs, Nanzhi first mixed one into the Black Porridge to feed the mule, and then pulled off some thatch to feed it some more.

As she watched the mule chomping on the thatch, Nanzhi stroked its neck.

The forage they had brought was long gone, and these days the mule had been nibbling grass on the roadside. But as the weather was getting colder, where could she find wild grass to feed the mule?
