110 The Men of the Rufus Family

Harrison's POV

As if the words on the marble slab had seared her, Kayla immediately withdrew her gaze and turned to me for help.

"Is this...?" she said, her voice trembling.

In contrast to Kayla's panic, my emotions remained eerily calm. I stared back into her frightened eyes and responded evenly, "Yes, this estate belongs to Peter's family."

"But..." Kayla's voice was filled with hope as she inquired further, "So, are you here to see Peter today?"

"No, Kayla," I replied, crushing her last shred of hope. My voice was devoid of emotion. "I'm here to meet the Alpha of the Rufus family because the dying waiter gave me the first surname, Rufus."

"But..." Kayla began again, her voice anxious.

"Relax, Kayla, we will be fine," I reassured her while squeezing her hand, but my gaze remained locked on the stone slab bearing the name Rufus.

At that moment, even I couldn't distinguish whether I was referring to Kayla and me, Peter and me, or the entire Rufus family when I spoke of "we."
