I shoved aside my guilt and ran. I didn't have time to dwell on mistakes. Right now, I needed to escape the commotion and find a way through the gate. The further away I got from the noise, the louder the footsteps pursuing me became. I could feel the ground tremble beneath roaring vehicles and determined officers, like something enormous was unburying itself from the earth. 

"There's three of them!" a feminine but deep voice shouted. "Don't let them get away!"

Crap.

I reached the south gate, where the expansive lake began to stretch around the base, and the fanged wires twinkling in the dimming sun seemed imposingly deadly now. My eyes inspected the severity of the barbs as I contemplated if there was any way to make it over them safely. My only options were to climb the gate somehow or flee the scene. 

I wouldn't dare consider the latter. Not when my friends were on the line.
