Chapter 39

Turning off the lights, and locking the door to his office, he went out the entrance. The area around the school was deserted.

He kept an eye out for Jian’s pickup as he went, but it was nowhere to be seen. There were hardly any cars at all. It was snowing too much.

When he turned in on their street, he saw that Jian had shoveled their driveway and the walkway to the stairs. He jogged up the steps and opened the door. “Hello!”

“Hi!” Jian peeked out from the living room. “How was your day?”

“Calm. People started to drop off by lunch, and by the end of the day, I was pretty much the only one left. Sara wishes us both a merry Christmas.”

Jian nodded. “I have made pizza—not Christmassy, I know—so we can eat now or we can eat later.”

“I could eat.”

“Great, we’re ready for the date after.”
