Chapter 75

“Allan.” He said my name again, and for a moment I thought he’d kiss me or hug me, but his features twisted into an expression of utmost pain. “Oh, Allan,” he said, covering his mouth with a fist, bursting into tears.

I was too emotional to speak.

He crouched down and hid his face in his hands. “Allan,” he said in a strangled voice. “I can’t believe you’re here.”

I stooped down by him. “Hey, it’s all right…don’t cry, Dav.”

“I’m sorry,” he said, wiping at his eyes. “It’s just the nerves.” He rested his head back on the wall. “It’s been a long week, and with this stupid exhibit, and you…I’m sorry.” He cracked a small smile. “I’m sorry. Man, I thought I’d be cool and collected. Look at me, I’m a mess.” He dug into his pocket and took out a tissue. He blew his nose. “Thank you for coming.”

I stood up, unsure of what to say. Of how to act.

Davinder rose as well, meeting my eyes. He had composed himself. “You got my letter, obviously. You read it? Well, of course you read it.”
