The Spaulding Apartment, Chicago
"We can't delay any longer," said Lena. "The baby doesn't want to wait. Cyrus and Kevie, please help her to a bed."
April screamed and asked them to wait until her contraction passed. "I have the urge to push."
"Fight it," urged Lena, "don't push yet. I'll be in in a moment."
Lena went to the bathroom and scrubbed her hands and arms.
Katya followed her in. "Do you know what you're doing? I mean have you ever birthed a baby before."
"Haven't you?" Lena asked in return. "I mean, a dame cannot live on this earth for ninety years and not experience a few things along the way."
"The opportunity never arose," answered Katya.
"Well do me a favor, then babe. Prepare her and put a bunch of towels under her bottom."
Katya looked at her with consternation.
"Go, sister. I do know what I'm doing. I will take good care of that girl and her baby. I promise."
Katya smiled and took off, kicking the boys out of the room and helped April off with her jeans.
