Dawn and Cathy looked at each other and started to laugh.
"She thinks you're my master," said Dawn.
"Do you mean you're free?" asked Emily.
"As a bird," Dawn replied.
"We are just great friends and equal partners," said Cathy.
"Partners?" Emily asked. "May I ask what your business is?"
Cathy thought for a second. "Well, gold, I guess you could say."
"Yeah," interjected Dawn, "and we're aimin' to find us some."
Emily relaxed after this, and they chatted most of the way to Sacramento. They discovered that Emily and her husband Harold Young were members of the Mormon Church. They had been married for thirteen years but had only lived in California for eight months.
Emily and Harold had heard rumors of gold being found in California and were very interested in anything the Pilgrims had to say about the subject. But Cathy and Dawn were careful not to give away too much in fear of compromising the timeline even further.
