We walked home slowly, and I managed to find enjoyment in the solitude. We didn’t live in a busy district, but there were still great restaurants around, still a reason to poke through the old grotto. But the recent spate of ghost sightings had been enough to send locals inside, and the news hadn’t spread enough to draw the tourists. It would soon, though. In fact, I bet Philippe’s Café could capitalize on that. It was a little late for Halloween, but maybe I could whip up some Christmas-themed ghost cakes…

“Hey.” Miri tugged on my hand until I faced her. “We’re here.”

I realized that she stood in front of our building, while I had, apparently, been about to pass right by. “Oh, sorry.” I stepped closer and kissed her temple, soft and lingering, to cover up my embarrassment.
