It was the strongest shadow beast they could produce so far, but it could only be made through such a method.

The Shadow Beasts were by no means invisible, but they were also not completely gone after "dying" as they beings made of shadows, when they "died" these shadows would spread out into particles and dissipate, slowly fading away! However, the Dark Shadow Sect had all sorts of tools to play around that.
