best slow burn i’ve read so far though i personally feel that madeleine’s character and actions can be a little inconsistent. cang wait to read more!!!!

What an intriguing and exciting story! It has left me completely hooked. From the touching farewell of Princess Madeleine with her nanny to the mysterious encounter in her room, the plot is filled with unexpected twists and fascinating characters. The detailed writing and the introduction of a possible romance have heightened my interest. Overall, it's a very good novel!

This Novel really is one with two halves. The first half I loved every bit of it with the suspense and the mystery of the Great Calamity, reading about how these cults were spreading through the world and ravageing villages really set the mood of how evil these villains are as well as how terrifying the figures behind them were. The characters were somewhat interesting, I cared for Annas development as well as Hathaways and I overall enjoyed the team of powerhouses that Marvin was teaming up with. However, Post-Great Calamity the book practically changes completely. I find it hard to describe but thinking back there’s a clear difference between the two halves, I’m just not smart enough to know what that difference exactly is. But, Ill list off the things I hate about the second half(Major Spoilers ahead): Hathaways entire personality change, she somehow went from a great character that you cared about to the largest pride filled ***** you’d ever seen. The author basically gave up on Anna and used her as a stand in for government affairs, one of the later chapters says that Anna was pale and weak from all the work she had to do and as Marvin was about to say something to her he was interrupted and the topic was glossed over, really showcases how the author gave up on those key side characters that can make or break a story. So many mysteries not having conclusions, there easily could have been another 200-300 chapters easy and every chapter after he frees Tiramisu is rushed. I frankly thought the author was going to forget about Tiramisu since there was no words about him and there was only about 70 chapters left and also he suddenly became Marvins best friend at the end of the novel when they had barely interacted, he’d talked more with Inheim, the almost silent monk, I feel than Tiramisu. The ending was clearly rushed and for some reason the author did it this way and I feel if he had written 200 more chapters and cleared up a lot of mysteries like the Night Monarch or World Ending Twin Snakes or his grandfather it would be a great book. He could have even ended it the same way with Marvin leaving the universe to search for an answer, because that’s an open ended ending with even a chance at a sequel. Oh, another thing I don’t like is the picture used by this novel, who is the woman wizard next to Marvin? Is it hathaway? Because that implies she has a large role and is allied with Marvin when in the second half she is a super ***** that completely disregards Marvin only for him to basically do whatever he can for her and his reason “because its hathaway”. They had a shallow relationship in the first half, she was really only interested in his power and was also extremley jealous of anytime another woman made a move on Marvin. Anna was clearly a better Female lead, even Madeleine wasn’t even that bad she was just a sadist that wanted power clearly better than Hathaways coldness and utter disregard for Marvin thats prevalent throughout the entire novel. Even though I have all these complaints Id still recommend it. The world building is fantastic, the first half is fantastic, Translation is fantastic, the abilities and fights are amazing, Marvin is a great MC who is ruthless when he needs to be which I enjoy. All in all, it is still a great novel, I started struggling At the crimson wasteland arc but still powered through after a couple of days. My only warning is to not expect an entirely satisfying answer at the end of the novel

I am obsessed with this book! I love Calhoun and I I love Madeleine’s character. She such a lady and he such a devil. I can’t wait to see them fall in love.
