Southwest Gangland The Rise of Chu Shanhe
Setting: The gritty, lawless underbelly of Southwest China (Guizhou and Yunnan provinces) during the mid-to-late 1990s.
Premise:
Chu Shanhe is a timid high school student living in the shadow of his older brother, a notorious gangster executed during the "Strike Hard" campaign of 1983. Despite his mother’s desperate attempts to keep him on the straight and narrow, the brutality of his environment forces his hand. In the summer of 1995, after being humiliated and seeing his mother assaulted by a local thug, Chu snaps. He violently maims his tormentor, an act that lands him in prison ("university") and irrevocably sets him on a path of no return.
The Rise in Liuxiang Town:
Upon his release, Chu seeks protection from Chen Qiang, a local "Society Big Brother," to shield his family from retaliation by a rival boss, "Tumor" (Liuzi). Alongside his loyal sworn brother, Xu Rang, Chu quickly sheds his innocence. He proves his worth through acts of extreme ruthlessness—kidnapping rivals, participating in torture, and surviving gang wars. Chu plays a pivotal role in helping Chen Qiang destroy Tumor and seize control of the town's lucrative bus station. However, his rapid rise and growing reputation incite paranoia in Chen Qiang. Fearing Chu will one day usurp him, Chen Qiang attempts to execute Chu (by burying him alive in a construction foundation).
The Pivot to the Borderlands:
Chu is saved at the last second by "Sir Niu," a young, idealistic police officer with a powerful political family background. In exchange for his life and future protection, Chu agrees to become a mole for Niu. He travels to the dangerous border region of Lincang, Diannan (Yunnan), to infiltrate a syndicate led by Jiang Qingbo ("Old Scarface"), a former associate of Chu’s deceased brother.
The Undercover Game:
In Lincang, the stakes are higher. Jiang Qingbo isn't just a gangster; he is part of a cross-border drug trafficking ring. Chu endures brutal tests of loyalty—including surviving a machete attack that leaves him with thirteen wounds and strapping explosives to his chest to rescue Jiang from Vietnamese bandits. Having won Jiang’s absolute trust, Chu uncovers the identity of the elusive drug trafficker, Xu Biao.
The Betrayal:
Ultimately, Chu Shanhe chooses survival and power over the code of brotherhood. Despite Jiang Qingbo treating him like family, Chu orchestrates a trap, betraying Jiang and the entire syndicate to Sir Niu and the armed police. The arc concludes with the destruction of the drug ring, cementing a complex "gray" alliance between Chu (the rising gangster) and Sir Niu (the rising political figure).
Themes:
The novel explores the loss of humanity, the blurred lines between the "Black" (underworld) and "White" (authorities), and the fatalistic belief that once one enters the Jianghu, there is no turning back—only a violent climb to the top or a tragic death.
