He had overheard Trelawney's prophecy that the boy born at the end of July would defeat the Dark Lord and told Voldemort about it, making Lily a target. But when he realized his mistake and asked Voldemort to let Lily go, Voldemort pretended to agree, and he went to Dumbledore to tell him about it. But Voldemort broke his promise and killed James Potter, and Lily sacrificed herself to protect Harry. After that, Snape became a double agent to make up for his mistake and stood on the side of justice. He was a member of the Order of the Phoenix.
