Hi! I just came across The Canary & The Wolf and got completely absorbed. The opening alone sets such a heartbreaking tone, a newborn girl left unnamed for a year simply because her parents only wanted an heir and she wasn't it, while ironically being the one who actually carries the family's rare looks. Watching her grandmother Eldreana arrive, notice the neglect immediately, and basically take over the household in a handful of scenes was such a satisfying kind of righteous anger. The moment she names her Canary after watching her light up at birdsong outside the window is such a tender turning point, especially set right against how coldly Alexia had been treating her up to then. And jumping forward to Canary as a teenager, poised and elegant like her grandmother but constantly picked apart for her weight even at a funeral, added this whole other layer of quiet, lingering pain to her story. I do manga style commission art, and stories built around this kind of layered family tension and a character who carries herself with so much quiet strength despite everyone underestimating her are exactly what I love drawing. I'd love to create art of young Eldreana holding baby Canary by that sunlit window as the canaries sing outside, or teenage Canary standing composed and unreadable at her grandparents' funeral while the whispers swirl around her.
