There was a swayamvara (a ceremony where the princess chooses her husband). Damayanti had already fallen in love with Nala in her heart. She chose Nala among many suitors. But then Nala was cursed which led to his downfall. He lost his wealth and had to leave Damayanti. Damayanti, on the other hand, was determined to find her husband again. After a long and arduous journey filled with many twists and turns, they finally got back together and lived happily ever after.

One of the main challenges was Nala's curse which made him lose his kingdom. Also, their separation was a huge challenge. Nala had to endure poverty and hard work in a foreign land while Damayanti had to search for him in difficult circumstances.

You might be referring to Nora in A Doll's House as a " puppet house." Nora in A Doll's House was the heroine of a three-act play by the Norway Henrik Ibsen. She was originally immersed in the happiness of her family. In order to treat her sick husband, Haiermao, she forged her father's signature and secretly borrowed money.
