William IWilliam I (September 1018-September 9, 1087) was the Duke of Normandie, France. He was also the first king of England in the Normandie Dynasty (reigned from December 25, 1066-September 9, 1087). He was the illegitimate son of Robert I, the sixth Duke of Normandie in France.
At the age of 8 (1035), William inherited the title of Duke of Normandie in France. At the age of 15, he was knighted and began to rule. From 1046 to 1055, he put down many noble rebellions. His cousin, King Edward the Confessor of England, had promised to pass the throne to him because he had no children, but when Edward died in 1066, the throne was elected to Harold, and William went to war with England. In September of the same year, he crossed the sea and first captured the towns of Pevensie and Hastings. In October, he defeated Harold II at the Battle of Hastings. Then he went straight to London and was crowned King of England on Christmas Day, starting the Norman Dynasty in England. In 1071, the ruling position of England was consolidated, and he was called "William the Conqueror". In 1072, they invaded Wales, and in 1081, they invaded Wales.
William I had taken many measures to strengthen his royal power. He used the land to control his vassals and granted most of the country's land to the nobles to make them lords. He required the noble lords to swear allegiance to the king and clearly be responsible to the king and not the upper lords. In August 1086, this policy was confirmed at the noble assembly, allowing the king to be above the power of individual feudal lords, thereby controlling taxes and the army. He stipulated that vassals were not allowed to privately conquer each other. Every time they went to a place, they abolished the previous nobles and cultivated their own descendants. When enfeoffing the nobles, they required the other party to guarantee loyalty. The scope of the oath included all those who had land in England. They also let the nobles supervise each other and separate the noble territories. They also guaranteed that in each piece of land, the land owned by the King of England accounted for the majority.
William I brought the traditional Norman rule and military rule into England, turning England from defense to attack. Under his rule, the Salisbury Oath was held to strengthen the royal power, and a national economic survey was organized to form the Doomsday Book as the basis for collecting taxes, making England the most powerful royal power in Western Europe at that time. He spent most of the last 15 years of his life in Normandie, handing over the government of England to the bishop. In 1087, he accidentally fell off his horse in a territorial dispute with France.
