⅘ Who murdered Takehiko?, it was himself who killed himself, but it was tajomaru and masago who gave Takehiko the motive to kill himself. We can assume that it is still a murder even though it was Takehiko itself who stabbed his chest and bleed till death. Throughout the story we know that Takehiko was tied up the whole time and we can say that Takehiko have not eaten or drank anything yet and he was left alone overnight in coldness in the hollow of the mountains that caused him to have hypothermia and hallucination because of lack of food. This is supported by the murdered man’s statement, “I heard someone crying/ I noticed it was my own crying”, and “I didn’t feel any pain”. Hypothermia can kill you slowly and Takehiko probably knew that it is better to die instantly rather than dying slowly. Takehiko is a strong and trained warrior, he could have survived if he put more effort, but he didn’t because he is despair of what his wife said and is probably trying to protect Masago’s honour knowing that she was violated. How do you know other characters did not murdered the samurai?. The woodcutter was very straightforward and he’s informations are accurate that we can tell he is not hiding anything and very open on what he saw, the woodcutter knows everything about the woods and can easily tell what happened just by seeing how the wood was cut or trampled down, we can say that the woodcutter have been cutting wood for very long time and not lying about daily quota. The old woman, with her statement she only says good stuff to her daughter and her son in law and we can assume that she wouldn’t let her daughter to be violated and dishonour the pride of her family and their status.
