Taoist AscendingIn Taoist legends, there were many cases of Taoist priests ascending. For example, Xu Xun, a Taoist priest of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was called Xu Jingyang and Xu Zhenjun. He was intelligent and knowledgeable in many aspects, such as classics and history. He was fond of Daoist cultivation spells, and he had learned all the secret teachings of the Great Cave Lord Wu Meng. Xu Xun usually educated the villagers with filial piety, fraternity, loyalty and faith, and later became the county magistrate of Jingyang. On the first day of the eighth month of the second year of Ningkang in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (374 AD), True Monarch Xu's family of forty-two people ascended to immortality.
In the China mythological system, Taoist priests becoming immortals was regarded as the highest realm achieved through cultivation. This process required a Daoist priest to refine Qi, refine essence, refine spirit, refine pills, refine weapons, and so on. He also had to grasp the principle of the integration of Heaven and man, strictly manage his body and spirit, and continuously improve his cultivation. Ancient Taoists pursued this realm through alchemy, cultivation, incantation, and other methods. Although it was more regarded as a cultural and spiritual symbol in modern times, in ancient legends and belief systems, the ascension of Taoists reflected people's yearning for immortality and transcendence of nature.

They had to strictly manage their own bodies, maintain their health and mental clarity, and master the principle of the unity of heaven and man to integrate their bodies with the power of nature. In the ritual of becoming an immortal, special materials such as mysterious pills and divine weapons needed to be prepared. Before the ritual, the body had to be cleaned and purified, and special meditation and cultivation had to be done. During the ritual, the body and the divine weapon had to be integrated into one, and through the mysterious ritual and cultivation method, the essence, qi, and spirit were combined to become an immortal.
