Hii! Just finished reading Love Me Like a Promise and I genuinely can't stop thinking about it. That opening with Corey unlocking his old apartment after two years, the walls still covered in the superheroes he painted as a kid, staring back at him like they'd been waiting, is such a warm, grounded way to open. And the reunion with Ezekiel and Andrew feels so real, that easy back and forth about being broke, about surviving rather than living, gives the story a genuine sense of place before anything dramatic even happens. What really stuck with me was the wall painting scene. Corey bringing Volt Strike to life on brick, a hero who has to sacrifice his own life force every time he uses his powers, mirrors Corey's own situation in such a quiet way, someone who's given up a lot just trying to get by. And then Mabel discovering him mid stream, completely unplanned, followed by that gut punch cut to her finding out about Draco's video right after, gives her decision to consider bringing Corey to the party a lot more weight than a typical rich-girl-meets-poor-artist setup. It's not really about Corey at that point, it's about her own quiet defiance. I do manga style character and scene commissions and I'd honestly love to draw one of these moments, maybe Corey mid stroke painting Volt Strike on that brick wall, or Mabel watching him from the balcony with the city lights below. Stories that build genuine friendship and class contrast around a real creative passion are exactly my favorite thing to illustrate.
