The Free Version of Hong En was a software that helped children between the ages of 2 - 8 to learn to read. It used the combination of animated characters and Chinese characters to attract children's attention through cartoons, nursery rhymes, etc., so that children could start to come into contact with and learn Chinese characters, so that children would be interested in Chinese characters, cultivate learning habits, and also help children develop their intelligence. It was free to use in version 3.0.4. It referred to the primary school Chinese textbooks published by the People's Education Bureau and selected 1200 commonly used Chinese characters for children, covering more than 90% of the common written language for children. There were many literacy links, such as "play, recognize, read, practice, write" and other links for each word, supplemented by "test, review" and other modules to help children learn to read step by step. However, there were also some arguments. For example, some people believed that children using the literacy APP would increase the burden on their eyes, and the games in the literacy APP might make children confused. Moreover, children might only memorize pronunciation instead of really knowing words, and the efficiency of literacy was low.(For example, turning on the daily literacy goal, turning off the play and writing sessions and only keeping the recognition and practice sessions, setting the non-skipping sessions, adjusting the literacy speed, turning on the review session, etc.). Some parents thought that their children could recognize many words unknowingly.
