Is chess a sport?Title: Are Chess - like Competitions Sports?
In general perception, sports are often associated with intense physical activities such as running, jumping, and swimming. However, chess - like competitions also deserve to be considered as sports.
First of all, chess - like activities are highly intensive mental sports. The art of a chess game lies in its rigorous conception and infinite changes. A chess player has to think deeply about every move. They need to consider the relationship between parts and the whole, gains and losses, as well as general rules and special changes. Moreover, they have to anticipate their opponents' moves and tactics. This is quite similar to other competitive sports. Although a chess piece weighs only a few grams and players just sit face - to - face, a single chess game in large - scale competitions may last for hours before a winner is determined. This long - duration process greatly tests the players' physical strength and willpower. And the exercise of endurance can also strengthen their physique.
Secondly, like other sports, chess has a complete training and competition system. There are professional chess players, coaches, and referees. The Swiss system and round - robin system adopted in the chess competition system are similar to those in other sports. In city - level, provincial - level, and national - level competitions, most of the certificates awarded to the winners are stamped by the General Administration of Sport. The organizers are mostly sports - related departments. Outstanding chess players can be selected to obtain titles such as national first - class athletes and master sportsmen. Meanwhile, there is also a national team leading chess players to train in professional bases in preparation for international competitions.
Finally, just as in other sports, chess has strict competition rules. Both sides compete under equal conditions, which is a competition of intelligence and skills. All these aspects show that chess - like competitions can be regarded as sports.
