Liushuang Lantern was a lantern in the form of farming culture located in Liushuang Village, Zhenlong Town, Xinyi City, Maoming, Guangdong Province. It was the most complete and primitive lantern in the form of farming culture in western Guangdong. Xinyi's six-year lantern festival has been passed down for more than 390 years. On the night of the 17th day of the first lunar month, the lanterns made by each family would be gathered together to form a team to walk around the village. People would raise their lanterns, walk on the fields, cross the mountains, and tour around the six natural villages. The local people called it the "annual lantern festival", which had evolved into the six-pair lantern festival. To make a lantern, one needed to cut bamboo, break bamboo strips, tie bamboo, weave, embroider, and then use various techniques such as paper-cutting, painting, poetry, and so on. Every year, Liushuang Village would produce more than 600 lanterns, and it would take up to three months to make them. The lanterns used bamboo strips as bones, Xuan paper as the surface, congratulatory words as the surface, and candlelight as the core. They were handmade and had a wide variety of exquisite craftsmanship. Among them, the "Six Double White Lanterns" was especially representative and was collected by the China Lantern Museum. The contents of the Six-pair Lantern Festival were mainly divided into six main segments: making lanterns, giving out lanterns, feasting guests, welcoming gods, appreciating lanterns, and traveling lanterns. It included making lanterns, gathering relatives and friends, traveling gods, praying for blessings in the new year, and so on. During the Lantern Festival parade, a large gong was used to open the way. Behind it were torches, golden plate lamps, eight treasure lamps, and zodiac lamps. The straw dragon was covered with incense and smoke from its mouth. It was very magical. At about 7 p.m., the lantern teams of six natural villages, namely, Liushuang Putou Village, Hongqi Village, Tanzheng Village, Qianjin Village, Hongxing Village and Shuangdong Village, picked up lanterns, beat gongs and drums, danced lions, and gathered at the cultural square. After 8 p.m., they fired cannons and set off fireworks to start the parade. The parade team passed by six natural villages and circled about 10 kilometers, which took about three hours. At 11 p.m., they returned to the village cultural square to gather. The people picked their lanterns and went home. They hung them in the middle hall. After that, there was a straw dragon dance performance. Each village gathered together to perform lion dances, fireworks display, president's speech, artistic singing and dancing performances, and other activities. The Six-Double Lantern Festival had a history of nearly 400 years. It was a provincial intangible cultural heritage project and a combination of Guangfu culture, Gaoliang culture and Zhuang Yao culture.
