Hi there, I just came across The Curses We Make, and John Dough's story immediately caught my attention. I love how it opens with him spiraling through alcohol and hallucinations only to stumble into a genuinely terrifying curse realm encounter, and the way that horror flips into dark comedy the moment Jane shows up, casually snaps his baseball bat in half, and drags him through a portal without warning just to recruit him into a hidden world of specialists. The running joke about his name, John Dough, being mistaken for a joke by literally everyone he meets is such a great lighthearted contrast to how unsettling his first night was. The contrast between the eerie, oppressive horror of the opening curse realm and the oddball, almost sitcom energy of Servandus once John arrives gives the story a lot of visual potential. I'd love to create a character illustration or cinematic scene capturing the faceless, screeching void creature chasing him through the alley, his disoriented first steps into the sunlit island town of Servandus, or the training hall moment where his explosive ability blows smoke everywhere while Thaddeus stands completely unscathed. There's a great mix of horror, dry humor, and hidden world discovery to draw from. I do manga-style commission art, and stories with reluctant chosen ones, hidden magical societies, and horror tinged humor are exactly the kind of stories I love bringing to life through illustration.
