It reads like a cross of Avatar and Starship Troopers (the novel, not the movie) with access to matrix technology or from that bruce willis film with the robots. It's a fun romp with endearing (and irritating) characters as they ride mechs in their VR game. The pop culture reference can be a bit forced, but it adds to the sometimes satirical feel of the story.
