Tiens, prends ça. » Bien sûr, ce genre de vie laisse des séquelles. Astra est devenue froide, sarcastique, un peu cynique… et capable de faire rire les autres avec des commentaires ironiques sur leur mort imminente. Parce qu’il faut bien rire avant de se faire croquer par un tigre à trois têtes, n’est-ce pas ? Sous cette carapace d’humour noir, elle cache un esprit stratégique et une sagesse vieille de cinquante ans, accumulée à force de survivre à ses erreurs et à celles des autres. Sa famille ? Ah, la crème de la crème. Son grand-père, titan impassible, pourrait gérer une apocalypse en sirotant un thé. Son père, dragon, mélange de discipline militaire et de favoritisme excessif pour sa fille unique (les fils, eux, doivent courir un marathon avec des boulets aux pieds). Sa mère, sirène psychique, capable d’influencer l’esprit des gens, sait exactement quand Astra a besoin d’un conseil, d’une gifle ou d’un thé à la menthe pour survivre au monde. Ses trois frères jumeaux sont des miroirs glacés de loyauté et de compétence, disciplinés à la limite du ridicule, mais chacun porte le poids de fins tragiques répétitives qu’Astra a observées à chaque vie… ce qui la rend encore plus sarcastique quand ils se plaignent de « ne pas être assez rapides ». L’apocalypse ? Oh, juste une tempête cataclysmique, suivie d’inondations, de réveils d’ADN primitif et de mutations qui transforment les humains et les animaux en créatures improbables. Fièvre, hallucinations, instincts incontrôlables… et Astra doit naviguer là-dedans avec le sens de l’humour d’un cynique et la patience d’un moine bouddhiste un peu fatigué. Ses vies passées lui donnent un avantage : elle sait quoi faire, qui va mourir et à quel moment, et surtout, elle sait que rien n’est jamais sous contrôle, même quand on croit l’être. Le roman ne se limite pas à la survie : il est question de stratégie, de drames familiaux, de moralité, et de comment une adolescente avec un esprit de vieille guerrière peut transformer la douleur et l’horreur en plans méticuleusement calculés… tout en lançant des piques à tout le monde, y compris aux monstres et aux catastrophes. Astra finira par rencontrer son harem futur – quatre individus puissants qui ont eux aussi survécu à des fins tragiques dans d’autres timelines – et avec eux, elle commencera à former un mini-« club de survie mutant » où loyauté, humour noir et pouvoirs dévastateurs deviennent la seule loi. Au bout du compte, Astra devra accepter sa mutation ultime, une bête terriblement ancienne, puissante et unique au monde, capable de manipuler les quatre éléments et de survivre à tout. Une créature qui symbolise tout ce qu’elle a traversé et ce qu’elle devra protéger : sa famille, ses amis, son harem… et, paradoxalement, l’humanité elle-même, qui est à la fois hilarante, grotesque et terrifiante dans sa capacité à se détruire.
