This ended up being a lot more interesting than I expected from the premise. Fenrir becoming Emperor of Outworld could have easily turned into a simple power fantasy, but there’s actually a lot of effort put into the politics, relationships and problems that come with trying to rule a realm that spent centuries under Shao Kahn. Reiko and the remaining loyalists give the story a proper conflict instead of everyone just accepting the new Emperor immediately. I also really like how the Mortal Kombat characters are handled, especially Kitana and Jade. They still feel recognizable instead of being reduced to love interests, and Fenrir’s interactions with them are genuinely fun to read. The story has plenty of violence and action when it needs it, but there’s also kingdom building, character development and a surprising amount of MK lore worked into the world. If you like Mortal Kombat fanfics that actually try to do something with Outworld beyond just tournament fights, this is definitely worth reading.
