I really enjoy this novel. The golden finger is reasonable and doesn't just function as plot armor. The writing is captivating, the world building fascinating without being bloated. The characters are robust, and you can see and understand their POVs and motivations. Yes, it isn't perfect... especially when the translator gets lazy at times. But this is a great story. If you want to know if this is worth reading, then yes, it is, and you don't have to read further as the rest is just something I find super fascinating about the author's writing. What is truly beautiful about it is that woven into the story is two beautiful allegorical elements (though I may be reading into it more than the author intended). The first one is historical. The novel utilizes its wuxia/xianxia world to critique and criticize the last Imperial Dynasty of China, i.e... the Qing Dynasty. Emperor Longqing and his Cao family and ministers represent the corrupt and accommodating Qing Dynasty. The Immortals and their Sects are the Western Powers trying to slice up China into colonies. While the MC, Chen Sansi, and his master and fellow disciples represent the people rising up with communist ideologies to expel the foreign invaders and overturn the corrupt Dynasty to form it's People's Republic. The second allegory is a modern one. Criticizing the West and Capitalism. Again, the same characters but different meanings. The Emperor and His ilk represent the "decadent and corrupt" Western governments like the US political machine. The Sects and their Immortals represent the unchecked corporations that dictate and manipulate the system to their benefit. Finally, our MC, Chen Sansi, and his group represent the CCP fighting and striving against the world order represented by those two previous forces. Now, I'm not saying I support those interpretations of the reading, but they do fit with the Chinese cultural perspective, and they way they are interwoven into the story is super interesting.
