Nathan grows up inside a real family, a mother who becomes the emotional center of his new life, a grandfather whose blacksmith and trading businesses become the seed of something much larger, and siblings who live and die and shape him in ways history books never mention. He loses his father young, the same way the history books say he should, and it's that loss that finally makes the truth click into place: he knows exactly where he is, and exactly what's coming.

He doesn't try to become a great man overnight. He can't. He's a child in a colonial household, and knowledge without leverage is just a dangerous secret. So he builds, slowly, over more than a decade of childhood and adolescence, a merchant network that quietly becomes an intelligence network, a family business that quietly becomes a manufacturing base, and a circle of local relationships that quietly becomes political capital. By the time the Revolution actually starts, Nathan isn't a prophet standing on a hill shouting warnings. He's a sixteen year old with money, contacts, trained militia, and a head full of engineering knowledge nobody else in Virginia has, and it takes every bit of that just to earn a seat at the table.
From there the story follows him through the Revolutionary War itself, where his foreknowledge starts bending under the weight of his own choices and the war stops resembling the one he remembers; through the shaky, broke, half functional years of the Articles of Confederation and the fight over the Constitution; through the birth of American industry, banking, and infrastructure, where Nathan tries to build institutions and learns that some of them work and some blow up in his face; and into the messy birth of American political parties, where his relationships with men like Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Franklin, and Lafayette are real, complicated, and never simply admiring.
Underneath all of it runs the same quiet ache that never fully goes away: Nathan loves the family he's building, genuinely, completely, and still doesn't know, and will never know, what happened to Sarah and his three children in the seconds after he told them to run and not look back.
The story has no fixed endpoint. It's built to run as long as the history keeps diverging, following Nathan from the boy who remembers into the man who built a country, and eventually into whatever his children and grandchildren do with the country he leaves behind.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
