This novel has the same problem that most “TV-based” novels on this site have: it creates nothing original. Chinese novels in this genre may be as racist or tone-deaf as people say, but at least they usually try to build an original plot. Even if they occasionally copy episodes or dialogues from the shows they are based on, they normally develop their own storyline and move away from the source material. That does not happen here. This novel is basically a copy-and-paste of the original shows. Yes, some dialogues are changed, and because several TV universes have been merged, new characters appear in scenes where they originally did not belong. But the overall structure remains exactly the same: same scenes, same order, same progression, with only minor changes. One chapter adapts Modern Family, then another adapts Friends, then Two and a Half Men, and so on. In essence, they are still the exact same shows, just with a few extra characters inserted into them. And honestly, that does not meet the minimum standard I expect from a novel that wants to be more than just a copy. That said, despite this flaw, I have to admit it is entertaining. The protagonist is fairly well written. He is not exactly Barney Stinson—because Barney is essentially an extreme caricature of the classic womanizer, almost a satire taken to its absolute limit—but the author manages to adapt that essence and tone it down enough for it to fit into a setting like Modern Family, where the original Barney would never realistically fit. And that part is done well.
