Great story with some nice character designs and vast, interesting world but it has some flaws. MC has so versatile knowledge and superior memory that it's sometimes too much (especially given his normal background, no preparation time and zero "superpowers", it's impossible for any mechanical engineer or any other engineer to accomplish something even remotely similar to what Roland did in such a short time and without painfully reinventing tons of little annoying things and prototyping). There are some technical errors in "science" part of the novel but if you aren't educated in the field it's hard to notice and most inventions and manufacturing processes are believable. Time to construct (even with witches powers) and encountering almost no problems designing everything on the other hand is a little bs. That said it's one of those rare novels where you can often learn something new that it's applicable and used in normal world. Another problem is MC depends on witches powers too much even when there is a realistic option to do it conventional way and because of that some witches are somehow doing exponentially more work than their magic power reserves should normally allow (Soraya ;) ). Some witches powers are a little too convenient to situation and what I think is the biggest flaw of RTW is smooth sailing syndrome. Encountered problems are too easily overcome and some witches powers (especially healing/regenerating powers) destroy any feeling of danger. There was one moment when I really thought Roland will lose his arm and it was such a great opportunity to make him grow, nerf his skills and depend more on other people, I was seriously so excited to potential interesting changes but we got convenient reset and downplay of whole dangerous encounter. Author don't like dramaturgy and it seems he want to keep novel ****** and light to read. There is very little emotional growth for our MC and some characters seems a little blank (Anna) but others make up for it for the most part. Romance in novel is subtle, almost non-existent and slow paced. There is a love ******** but it seems it will be resolved one way or another, no harem in sight. Overall it's a great read. I recommend it to anyone who likes unorthodox, interesting world, science, kingdom building as these are RTW strongest points. Translation here is mediocore. Some choices were made to suit english readers and I think it wasn't a good idea. Well, we will see. It's readable at least.

You'd probably like Mushoku Tensei if you want some tragedy.

Of course I like Mushoku Tensei ;) It was my first isekai novel and because it was so interesting I started reading others, RTW included. It's not like I want or expect tragedy but I like when characters have some realistic challenge and they fail from time to time, something which makes them more believable. It's more interesting that way for me.

I think that your review probably the most honest one of this novel I have read so far. While admitting that it is still a good read overall (it is), you lay out most of the problems with the story; though, I disagree with your, "No harem in sight," comment. While only two of the main female characters are really interested in the MC romantically, every single person in the novel, be it male or female can do nothing but shower praise on the MC. Though no one in the novel outright says it, every two or three chapters the author has to stop to have a witch use an internal monologue to practically pledge their life to the MC, something I find to be wearing my patience. Not every woman wants the MC, but to say this story is void of any harem tropes is inaccurate.

This review was written after 350th chapter and at that moment witches didn't behave as irrationally as they do now. I had hope that author will take more realistic approach but you are right, now for sure there are some harem elements in this novel. Whole witches-Roland interactions are a little weird if you ask me. I really wish I could edit this review as there are tons of grammatical errors and some parts need a little update. Well, there is an option of deleting and writing a new one but that way almost no one will read it.

I know what you mean, my review at the 330 mark praised it for being devoid of harem tropes too, but mine did not have as many likes as yours. I thought would comment on an already popular comment I also thought was worth reading to lay out my point so more people would see it.

well Roland is like a father to the rest, I like the mentality of remembering who gave what you have now. They haven't showered praises at Roland before because they weren't sure Roland could have accomplished what he promised, but he is close now. If Bill Gates reaches out to a group of homeless people and turn their life around, wouldn't they be grateful?

I'm not saying it's unrealistic, I'm saying it's bad writing. It's repetitive without literary purpose and hinders plot-devlopment. Any writer worth their salt knows to keep things short and sweet as much as possible. This kind of problem pops up with most Chinese novels, but I had hoped RtW was one of the few exceptions.

Yes one of the best world with a lot of plot and a MC not all in muscle !

I agree with you on the slow moving romance, because Anna is said to be one of the most beutiful and Roland is often alone with her, but do neat nothing ! For the science however, i know some engineer who remember a lot in their science education in many different fields! It depends a lot on what kind of school life he got and if he worked on different field before mechanical. We know to few about is previous life, just that he wasn't the best but a diligent student. After that, perhaps the human in the new world are more intelligent and can adapt more easily to the new knoledge given. But true MC depends to much on witches and need to become more mature, but I still find him becoming better.
