I expected more from this up and coming book, but it just feels like a solid story with many points of squandered potential. First The Bad There are so many things the author could've done but didn’t. Mc received a SSS grade swordsmanship talent. But it is simply a Talent, an acceleration not something concrete. There are many points the author could have expanded upon, like restudying sword skills in a reframed perspective, Creating sword styles, copying and improving sword moves from opponents, Creating whole new schools of thought (possible with the most advanced sword talent to exist in this world.) Mc could have gone around gaining experience with his new understanding with the sword, learning from opponents, taking moves from the most unexpected of places and improving upon them to create something new, creating styles to counter others, comprehending a deeper understanding of his own body. But what does mc do with his flagship talent? Picks up two swords and calls it a day. Ironically he uses his talent with the sword like a crude stick. This story barely has anything to do with swordsmanship, tho the story lives up to the name “STARTING with sss rank swordsmanship talent” as swordsmanship is nothing but a kickstarter to mc’s romances and political maneuvering. Also mc has no personal goals to set him apart, he just reactions to the environment. Mc reborn in the past wants to prevent the terrible outcome, and make his house survive and thrive. These are goals anyone in his position would have, but what does He want for his individual self… Mc unfortunately ends up as bland but it is not his fault, he was not created with enough depth in mind. Noticeably very few characters have real depth, even then there are no interesting or unexpected qualities to make them feel whole unlike mc’s hate for goblins which I honestly had my hopes up. And there are no wonderful surprises within the side characters, they are all just one thing, there is nothing to spice up the characters, there is no mix of flavors or the emergence of something real, no one is balanced or unbalanced as they all are just one dimensional making the world feel incomplete. Now The Good Otherwise a solid story. Does not take the generic path and does not make All the bad guys moronic. Also the eye rolling cliches are avoided. The characters are very simple and they are fully their given architecture. Though smart guys aren’t very mind blowing smart, and surprisingly the dumb ones aren’t stereotypical dumb. But sadly all bad guys are unexceptional in intelligence and well everything. Surprisingly it did a notable job at capturing the women in that time period. Usually authors are influenced by modern times and make the people highly modern like every woman is a badass woman or a caricatures of medieval times as a helpless damsels in distress or outright stupid, but this, this felt real was spot on.
