it's up in the air at the moment. But thanks to the inspiration from one of my readers, I'm slightly leaning in favor of Toph. I may Age her up a couple years so she would be closer to the age of my MC

i agree. that's who it's up to at the moment, Azula or Toph. However, I didn't want to be to cliche. Azula is highly picked. when it comes to Zangpo, Azula would be an enabler towards his darker side, and Toph would be the type says, "I can save him." I still haven't totally decided if I want my character to be neutral towards Aang or be against him. And depending in girl pick, that may decide it.

i love the anti hero/villain mc's in ATLA so i dont mind either one is good

I think Anti hero would the appropriate title. Zango just wants power, and as it will be revealed next chapter, he wants to be the most powerful bender in the world. He will be a killer. He will be brutal. He will be intelligent. But he will be kind to the innocent. However, it will be a gradual build-up towards that point. By the time Canon starts, I'm hoping that I've shown how dark he can be and ruthless to get what he wants.

that's what I was thinking too. But then I had a thought, what if he met Toph years before Aang did? A time when my MC still had a bit of innocence in him. What if he found Toph when they both needed a friend? I'm not saying that she would of what he will do in his quest for power, but what if she was "blinded" (pun intended) by her friendship with him so much so that she didn't "see" (pun also intended) the signs of him going down a darker path before it was too late? I'm curious about how I could write their interactions with each other down the line during the Canon timeline if that happened.

yeah but if you do it that way the relationship wont last unless you make him stop killing cos when she stops being "blind" to it she wont be alright with it

id suggest if you do choose toph make this a toph who is alright with killing and it should have huge potential

Not sure if I can make that happen without it being totally out of character for toph. Maybe I can make the final choice for love interest be Azula after a complicated childhood friendship with Toph? I bet I could make a believable Toph that falls in love with the MC, but isn't able to look past the "evil" he has done, so she tells him she can't see him anymore or something? Or even just can't be his friend anymore but will always hold secret feelings for him? I can imagine Toph telling the gang that the Cyclone isn't evil, just misunderstood or something like that. Obviously, she would be aware of his past and poor upbringing, giving her an insight into his life that no one else has. Except Azula eventually.

YES that sounds awesome, this gives him an stance like zuko rather than being a straight up villain to them, i cant wait for how you write this story, theres not enough completed ATLA fics
