The novel is pretty good for a start; there are some mistakes, but it's probably the author's first novel. It's quite well done, and the main character is well-written. I've noticed some differences as well, like when casting a spell, usually a circle appears with a star inside it, but in this novel, a set of symbols comes out of the hands instead.
