I like that the MC is thinking despite the restrictions he's in. It makes me like him. And I'm not going to look too deep into it since it's a fantasy book anyway

what are you talking about the MC is brain dead from the beginning. He passively goes along with things he know can kill him. Just because he doesn't want to act odd.
