It's off to an interesting start, but all this billionaire scientist mc background with a lot of influence to allow him to go to another planet in a new body and then become some kind of space hippie seems so rushed, it's like the new mc's body will change his personality.

I think the new bodies do affect their personality. Even in the new film, Quaritch has shown signs of change in his Avatar body which will probably be one of the redemption character arcs James Cameron uses.
