Ok, so, this story certainly starts off with a main character being in a completely miserable situation. The pacing of negative emotions with a moment or two of positive stuff or neutrality sprinkled in makes it readable, and I like the general feel of the language. The first chapter is one of the best chaps in this novel. The second has a bit of an infodump syndrome going on, but it's not the worst I have ever seen. A nice MC. A genuinely nice one. Perhaps the side characters could be a bit more fleshed out, but I see nothing wrong with the main character. Somehow, the author just pushes the right emotional buttons. So the strength is the feeling of sympathy. The weakness is that everything seems to revolve around the most central concepts of the story and at times, it does not feel fleshed out. Doesn't make it unreadable of course. And the language is enjoyable as well.
