This is translation review, not novel review. If you are not familiar with it, webnovel has started westernizing most of the novels in 2021. This is awful practice that kills original novel. At best you get only names, places and organizations westernized and at worst you get half novel gutted and other half totally rewritten by translator. With best case scenario you get only names, places and organizations westernized which introduces plotholes cause while names are westernized, actual writing and character culture arent. You get chinese way of thinking, chinese places and organizations translated into most famous western (USA) alternatives and as a result you see absurdity. And with the worth case scenario, you are not actually reading original authors work, but some "translators" plagiarization cause half novel is removed (sometimes critical explanations) and other half is badly rewritten. And cause this requires so much work compared to normal translation, either webnovel is stealing original authors work and rewriting it (cause most of those novels dont come from qidian) or they are just using translators that dont know chinese so they are rewriting story with help of MTL (seen too many edited MTL translations lately on webnovel). overall any westernized novel deserves automatic 1 star review.

These books are custom written by Chinese authors for Webnovel (not Qidian or other Chinese sites). So with this in mind, the Chinese authors use English names. Readers prefer names that they can remember, instead of Lin Y, Lin X, Lin Q. These changes are not done by the translator. Both translator and authors are paid by Webnovel. Stop spreading your fake news.

No comment about the review, but, was there actually any market research to quantify if the WN audience preferred westernized characters names rather than ethnic or literary names more in line with culture background/inspiration which majority of works/stories hosted on WN are derives from Asian influences or references? This is different from living in a Western culture to adopt a English moniker for ease of use in daily life. This is also an intriguing aspect when I encounter different artistic licence taken for translation of graphic novels/comics or subtitles or audio dubbing of videos (both animated or live action). I am a first generation born in a Western culture but for WN content, and dependent on the story setting or design itself, I personally prefer the pinyin names of characters as flow to the chinese or asian type environment created. Of course, i do not fault an author who chooses to use Western names originally but I hope it’s either from necessity (such as not knowing/looking for asian names but creating asian type setting) or thoughtful choice for character design rather than some appeasement belief that reader/s prefer to see or ‘remeber’ western name(s) more easily. The WN app seems to have users from many different nations so this seems difficult to quantify unless a very vast survey of readers was taken, and even then will be impossible to please everyone. Most fans tend to prefer original character names even if it may not be from their own heritage (big example is how prolific content can cross borders). I imagine this may also be different when some actors or performers may adopt a localised name for different countries which their works may be released or promoted …
