This is the kind of novel where a great concept and beautiful idea have been expressed in the most worst way possible. Of all games, movies and concepts in today's world, battle royal is one with the greatest amount of casual players. They are some of the easiest games to get started with while having a very steep learning curve. But they only work because nothing happens to the loosers. If every time you died you would have to feal that death, nobody except masochists or serial killers would continue playing. They are designed to be casual, fast and ever changing. Without a filter by skill and experience level, they are literally some of the worst games out there. For long term investment of time there needs to be a reward, but BR game wins are fleeting and so common to be practically useless. The emotional impact is also greatly reduced because death comes comparatively fast. If you really want a feast of negative emotions, you could do something like a survival game where everyone needs to work together, but there aren't enough resources for everyone to survive or resources are only available in dangerous locations. Literally any good dystopia would have been better than a simple Battle Royal game. If you wanted something to be addictive, you would only need to reward those successful with power over the others. Most people wouldn't mind suffering a little if they could make others suffer more and if the roles change often enough, every cycle would mean even more complicated emotional drama.

Did you even understand why he picked battle royal as a templet? And did you even read the part that the winners get real life benefits?

No I didn't understand why he picked that, which is why I wrote the review. Surprise me. Even if the battle royal gives real life benefits it will only do so for one person. If you think this is a reason to choose it I want to propose a challenge. Become a pro gamer and join a tournament against some of the world's best players, then set bets that you get a hundred dollars from a gang if you win but get beaten up if you lose. This game has lower stakes and a higher risk reward ratio so you can play it 1000 times to get good enough to bet those truely capable. Do it and you might prove everyone wrong who believes in balancing games. There is a reason why games have leagues to sort different levels of players. Real world battle royal, even without major consequences is stupidity squared.
