i believe the author is doing a great job by diverging from cannon. Following cannon is kinda tedious and boring, while partly or loosely following cannon and adding unique twist is awesome!!

Well similarly, each of the major women in GoT are prideful enough to fight for the right to be the main wife. So it wouldn't really work.
