I think for most people it's probably just because using a weapon would restrict them a lot while fighting, as most of their elemental moves would be from range and getting close would increase the risk of being hurt, especially when they do not strengthen their body like Grey. For Grey I'd imagine it's mostly the former, as well as that it would probably be useless as most metals would do nothing to people at his level, and while he has the elemental sword he cannot use it properly so it is more like a stick. It's sharpness would not mean anything at this level so the only thing that would matter would be the brute force of his body behind it, and so while it may deal slightly more damage, it would be wasting and destroying the sword for nothing, and be less efficient and powerful than his elemental attacks.
